The Scarborough Bluffs face bravely into Lake Ontario, bravely because the water and the extreme slope of the cliff face means that erosion will slowly bring down the grey clay wall over time. Large chunks of the hill fall to the base and large cracks appear along the cliff face. When you walk along their edge it is hard not to be nervous at the possibility that today will be the day that a piece will just happen to come fall down. There was a nice smattering of fall colours in the trees on the slopes.

A fall weekend usually means large crowds on the park along the lake front which looks back to the Bluffs. The cold weather and light drizzle kept those crowds away when I visited, but it was still a good day to be out taking pictures.

The weather forecast had wind warnings so we made the journey to the Scarborough Bluffs to see if anyone was taking advantage of the wind to get some surfing in. There were some cars with surf boards waiting for the perfect conditions of wind and surf to provide some good waves but that didn't happen while we there.

The waves were churning the beaches and the wind was blowing very small parts of the bluffs into our faces. Coming up to the bluffs we looked way down upon Lake Ontario and Bluffer's Park - when they say steep drop ahead they really mean it. You could see the sediment along the edges of the bluffs turn the water brown and further out the water was different shades of green and blue.




The rain started to fall and the drop in temperature also brought snow back to us in May so the wide expanse of sandy beach of Bluffer's Park was empty of sun worshipers and the lifeguard stations were left waiting for the season to begin.

Now that the Toronto Islands are no longer big chunks of ice it's almost time to visit the chain of former Scarborough Bluffs erosion debris and which is now a great destination for sports and entertainment. Here are the Bluffs just waiting for their turn to swim west and join the fun of the islands.



Although you have to take a ferry boat to get to the islands (routes to Hanlan's, Centre and Ward's Islands) you can also bring your bikes or roller blades to get around on the extensive bike paths.



Enjoy the many beaches (swim buck naked at Hanlan's Point clothing optional beach), picnic areas or spend some time in the island world Centreville Amusement Park on Centre Island or the small and free Far Enough Farm petting zoo.

Don't forget to turn around and look back at the City and it's fabulous skyline.
